Our Classroom

Basic Classroom Information

I have been fortunate to have participated in 4 technology grants (TLP, Learning Space, CLIC, TELDEC III) so we have a wealth of hardware and software in our classroom. Our classroom is set up with 8 student desktop computers and 4 wireless laptops. In addition to the computers, each student has an AlphaSmart 2000 keyboard. We have a scanner, digital cameras, CD burners and color printers as well as other equipment. The Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is our district standard software and we use that extensively, but we also have a wealth of other software to use as needed.

Student desks are organized in groups of 2 (with an occasional 3 when I have more than 24 students). We are Macintosh-based, but have one Windows machine. The computers are located at each student group - facing the desks. Students work cooperatively, passing the keyboard to give each student in their group equal access. If students need to work individually, the computer is rotated 90 degrees and the student works independently away from the group.

Our AlphaSmarts have an IrDA (infrared) port so work is uploaded into computers.

With fewer computers I used these configurations. Pictures below show students working
