Helping Students Catch Up

Instruction is provided for students from kindergarten through middle school who need additional assistance in basic skill areas. The goal is to enable students to be successful with the regular curriculum.

A variety of methods and programs are used. These include: a reading readiness program for kindergarten students; Reading Recovery, an intensive one-on-one tutoring program for first grade students: and Read Right, another intensive program for reading, is used for elementary students. Instruction is provided by support staff in classrooms and in pullout groups for grades two through six.

Running Start/Tech Prep

High school students can also gain college credit while in high school through either the Running Start Program or through our Tech Prep Program. Running Start students attend community college while in high school, gaining both college and high school credit. Tech Prep students stay at the high school but gain college credit for special high school classes. Through these programs, it is possible for a student to earn a two-year college degree along with their high school diploma.

Special Education

Parents of children, ages birth to school age, who have concerns about their child's development such as walking and talking, an call the Special Programs Office at 360-618-6215 to set up a screening and evaluation. Parents of school-age students with concerns about their child's progress should contact their child's classroom teacher and/or building principal to learn about the options available. Specially designed instruction is available for eligible students with disabilities from birth to age 21. This instruction is developed to meet individual education needs using a variety of program instruction including: special academic instruction: speech and language therapy; physical and occupational therapy; behavioral support; preschool; parent support and vocational/transition training.

Additional Programs

Arlington Public Schools receive federal funds for students of migrant families and for students whose parents or grandparents are Native American. If this applies to your family, please contact your child's school.

Bilingual instruction is available at each building for students whose primary language is not English.

Home/Hospital instruction is provided to students who are unable to attend school for four weeks or more due to a medical situation. A doctor's statement is required for this limited amount of instruction time.

Gifted and Honors Education

Each of our schools offer special programs for very advanced and highly talented students. Gifted education programs are available in each elementary school. Special teachers work with students, families, and classroom teachers to create a gifted education plan for each eligible students. These plans lead to an educational experience specially tailored to each gifted child's special talents, abilities, and interests.

Gifted and talented middle and high school students are offered a variety of challenging course and programs. Post Middle School offers honors classes for the most advanced students. Arlington High School students with special talents in academic areas, fine arts, physical activities, and other areas have opportunities to take advanced classes and participate in the many activities, sports, and clubs offered.
